REES Georgian Fellow (2019-2020) and Tbilisi State University Associate Professor David Maziashvili’s monograph is dedicated to the reception of William Shakespeare in postmodern English prose, drama and English and Georgian theatre.
Specifically, the study examines the works by contemporary English writers Angela Carter, Ian McEwan, Edward Bond, and Howard Barker.
The monograph is also a reflection on the most recent interpretations of Shakespeare’s works staged by contemporary British and Georgian directors in London and Georgian theatres in the contemporary Western socio-political and cultural context.
The monograph is also notable because it is accompanied by three documentaries about the Georgian Shakespeareana made by David Maziashvili in Tbilisi, London and Oxford in 2015, 2019 and 2020. The book is intended for specialists, students and the general audience interested in Shakespeare, postmodern literature, drama and theatre.

The ballet Marijan’s Room was prepared remotely, in quarantine amid coronavirus pandemic. Mariam Aleksidze worked on the concept, artistic ideas and text together with David Maziashvili. Actresses Eka Molodinashvili, Lela Akhalaia and Natalia Jugheli recorded Marijan’s text for the musical version of the ballet in the isolation of their own homes.
The text written by Marijan in 1925 is full of her personal emotions: these thoughts, truly intimate on the one hand, are also universal and very topical today.

On the photo by Tina kazakhishviili, you see the soloist of Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet Intigam Mammadov, to whom I trusted very delicate and passionate role. He holds the fan, which belongs to Granny Ira, ballet dancer Irina Aleksidze.
Tbilisi State Chamber Orchestra – Georgian Sinfonietta was the initiator of the idea and I was utterly pleased hearing this. The idea of Giorgi Aleksidze in chamber genre unites these two phenomenon – music and dance and to present them equally. I was very interested to find and unite Baroque and Neo- Baroque music’s authentic performance and to find contemporary choreographic form and that is how I staged Folia.
Folia is one of the earliest European musical theme. We come across the dance name Folia in the play of Portuguese dramatist Gil Vicente ( XVI ) that means “madness”, “passion”. At first Folia was carnival (pageant) dance accompanied with castanets and other instruments. It was performed by men, who were disguised as a women and they act so loose and loud as mad. From time to time Folia became as a love dance and later it approached to Sarabande – spanish dance. Therefore, the pace became slower and major turned into minor.
With the guidance of Giorgi Kerelashvili the performance’s music version unites music by Antonio Vivaldi, Francesco Geminiani, Andrea Falconieri, George Frideric Handel about the theme of Folia. Antonio Vivaldi’s work Stabat Mater will be performed by countertenor Mikheil Abramishvili.
I don’t know it yet, how our performance turned out. The stage manager of our company Niala Godziashvili told me that I myself am FoliaJ))
I want to express my sincere gratitude to Tbilisi Baroque Festival and and my dearly lovable Royal District Theatre, where on 1,2, 3 December Folia is waiting for you !

More...Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet Company, during its third season, will hold its first international tour to Germany!
The project Hinter den Grenzen (Beyond Borders) has been selected for funding by the German Music Fund in 2018, when Georgia is the Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The goal of the project is for the Georgian artists of the same generation – poet Rati Amaghlobeli, composer and musician working in Germany Rusudan Meipariani and choreographer Mariam Aleksidze – to create a new literary-musical-choreographic performance which will premiere in Germany. Together with the actors of Giorgi Aleksidze Tbilisi Contemporary Ballet Company, Rusudan Meipariani and members of her ensemble – Georgian musicians working in Germany Nata Meipariani and Giga Khelaia – will participate in the performance. The choreographic performance entitled The Sound of Daira…, which Mariam Aleksidze staged to Rusudan Meipariani’s solo programme for the Tbilisoba festivities in 2017, will also be performed within the framework of the project.
Between 8 and 13 November, three performances are planned to be held in the south of Germany. After the performance in Stuttgart, a meeting-discussion between the audience and the creative team will be held, led by culturologist Ulrike Bohne.
The German Music Fund and Tbilisi City Hall are the supporters of the project.
We wish the company a worthy start in the international arena and new and interesting experiences from the tour!
